Before your course begins
Complete one free evaluation before your first course. Buying materials for self-study or use with your own teacher? Use the automatic evaluation for an indicative starting-level recommendation. It does not include personal feedback, speaking review or a conversation with Mr. Polushin. Enrolled HOE class students receive the fuller teacher-reviewed evaluation after their access is confirmed. At least early pre-intermediate English (A2) is required; some courses need a higher level. You do not repeat placement for every course.

What if my English is very basic?+
You are welcome here. Tell us when a task is too difficult. Simpler tasks help your teacher find an appropriate starting point.
Will I receive an automatic score?+
The automatic material evaluation gives an indicative recommendation immediately. The HOE class evaluation is reviewed by your teacher; it does not issue an automatic overall proficiency score.
Will this assess conversation?+
Recordings show spoken production. A separate conversation with your teacher can assess interaction, clarification and turn-taking.
What happens to my answers?+
Your answers are private. Automatic material responses support your recommendation. HOE class responses and recordings support teacher review. Contact HOE to request deletion.
Can I finish in less than 30 minutes?+
Yes. Thirty minutes is the maximum, not a target. You can complete sections early. Unfinished or omitted tasks are not automatically marked incorrect.
